1408” is Stephen King's twist on the perennial “haunted hotel room” ghost story.

According to King’s short story and novella collection Everything’s Eventual (2002), the author first intended “1408”  as a simple exercise, an example to include in his book On Writing. But “1408” begged to be written—and scared him while he wrote it.

In the story, a scorched but working micro cassette contains recordings that help explain what happened in room 1408. Apparently this short story first appeared in King’s audio compilation Blood and Smoke, which I’ll listen to for my second pass through this story.
